The successor to the SWIPE + RIDE system is in the starting blocks. It will be called MVVswipe and will greatly simplify the use of the MVV network.
MVVswipe will also focus on simplicity! You don't have to worry about the fare or complex questions such as “A one-way ticket today or a day ticket?” before you start your journey. You can simply swipe before you start your journey and board. When you arrive at your destination, check out. And if you forget to check out, MVVswipe will remind you.
This is the big difference to the previous “Swipe&Ride”: MVVswipe is now based on the familiar MVV zones, so it is no longer charged as the crow flies. Short journeys and single journeys are charged according to the price of the stripe card. For example, a single journey in zone M currently costs €3.40 instead of €3.90. For passengers between 18 (minimum age) and 21, the corresponding U21 price applies. As in the pilot project, a cost airbag will also be integrated into MVVswipe: Even if you make several journeys per day, the maximum fare charged will be the price of the respective day pass - depending on the zones M to 12 traveled - according to the MVV fare logic. Weekly and monthly tickets are not offered via MVVswipe.
If you use MVVswipe, you can take up to four additional adults, four U21 passengers (aged 15-20), up to eight children (aged 6-14) or a combination of these (e.g. four children and two adults). It will not initially be possible to take bicycles with MVVswipe.
MVVswipe is a smartphone-based sales system with automatic ex-post fare calculation. Using location data (GPS), the smartphone recognizes a check-in initiated by the customer at the start of the journey, the distance travelled on MVV (via local public transport) and the check-out initiated by the customer at the end of the journey. The system then uses this location data to calculate the correct fare for the distance traveled (depending on the zones and number of passengers) in the background. If several journeys are made per day, a maximum fare applies (MVV Community Tariff, B.I.2.2.8 Section 4 Paragraph 3). Depending on the number of journeys per day, the customer's previously created means of payment will be debited.
These General Terms and Conditions apply to the purchase and use of MVVswipe from Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund GmbH, which acts in the name and on behalf of the transport company Busbetrieb Josef Ettenhuber GmbH. They supplement the General Conditions of Carriage, Fare Regulations and Fares of the MVV Community Tariff as amended from time to time.
MVVswipe is intended to significantly simplify access to the world of public transport. In-depth knowledge of fare zones and complex decisions about short trips, single journeys or day tickets are no longer necessary. MVVswipe should always calculate the cheapest ticket option for the customer on a daily basis.
In addition, a paper ticket is no longer necessary; the ticket is just a “swipe” away on the smartphone.
The fare for an MVVswipe journey is determined for the registered customer and all fellow travelers according to the logic of the short-distance fare or the stripe card fare or U21 offer and for accompanying children according to the children's fare, depending on the fare zones travelled through and the time between check-in and check-out.

In the case of several journeys, the customer and, if applicable, fellow travelers are always charged the so-called best price, i.e. the best combination of single or day tickets for one day.
Examples:
The maximum fare for all journeys made on a calendar day is the fare of a day ticket for all fare zones traveled to and through or, if applicable, a combination of the fares of one or more day tickets and individual journeys.
Examples:
A journey made on a calendar day is any journey that was started and ended on a calendar day, as well as the last journey that was started on a calendar day and ended on the following calendar day. Journeys started and completed between midnight and 6 a.m. are allocated to the previous day if a maximum fare is reached on this day (note: the maximum journey time for a journey is five hours. An automatic check-out takes place after five hours at the latest. A journey that starts before midnight and ends after 6 a.m. is not possible for tariff reasons).
The maximum fare is based on the zone(s) traveled in each case and the number of passengers.

MVVswipe works on the principle of a check-in/check-out system in the MVV app. Before you start your journey - before boarding the particular public transportation vehicle or entering the restricted area - open the MVV app.
If you are already registered for MVVswipe, you can skip the following paragraph. To register, open the MVVswipe window in the MVV app. There you will be guided through various steps in which you can create a customer account with your personal information and your desired payment method. To use MVVswipe, it is necessary to share your location. It is also helpful to allow notifications (e.g. for a forgotten CheckOut).
Before starting your journey, make sure that the correct starting stop has been recognized. The best localization is reached on the surface. If the correct location has not been recognized, you can change it manually. Perform the check-in by swiping from left to right on the display.
As soon as the successful check-in is shown on the display, you are authorized to travel. The app has memorized the departure stop by using the smartphone's location. The ticket can be displayed during a check-in by clicking on “MVVswipe” => “Manage”.
Please note that a check-in on a public transportation vehicle that is already moving can be recognized as an attempt at fraud.
As soon as you have finished your journey after getting out of the vehicle or after leaving the area where tickets are required, carry out the CheckOut by swiping from right to left on the display. You will reach the best GPS positioning on surface level. The app automatically recognizes at which stop the CheckOut was carried out and then calculates the exact fare for the route travelled. The fare is automatically deducted from the stored means of payment.
If, for technical reasons, it is not possible to check in with the app or you have forgotten to check in, you must purchase a ticket for the conventional fare via an alternative sales channel, e.g. via the HandyTicket or the ticket machine. If you have not successfully checked in or have forgotten to check in, you do not have a valid ticket.
After checking in, you can check out again within a few seconds. If the entire journey includes the same stop and the time window is only a few seconds, no amount will be charged. You may see a journey with €0 on the invoice.
If you have nevertheless been charged for a journey, please report this within 14 days of completing the (unused) journey via the contact options in the app or via the contact form to customer service in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
If you have accidentally checked out, please note that you do not have a valid travel authorization. Therefore, check in again as soon as possible or purchase a ticket in another way.
If you need to transfer, you do not need to check out or check in again. You can simply remain checked in.
If you continue your journey after an interruption, the MVV-rules regarding time and distance apply. The maximum travel time is 5 hours. If you do not check out manually within 5 hours, the system will automatically check you out.
The period of validity of the travel authorization begins with the check-in in the application before entering the first vehicle used for the journey (bus, streetcar, regional train) or the specially marked operating facilities (S-Bahn, U-Bahn) and ends with the check-out in the application and leaving the last vehicle used for the journey (bus, streetcar, regional train) or leaving the specially marked operating facilities (S-Bahn, U-Bahn).
Please note: As with the conventional fare, return journeys with MVVswipe are not permitted; these also result in a new journey calculation: you will be charged for two one-way tickets.
You must perform the CheckOut after the journey - i.e. after completing the last journey and leaving the (last) transportation vehicle respectively the restricted area - so that the app completes the location determination and calculates the route travelled. You will reach the best GPS positioning on the surface level. You carry out the check-out process in the app with a swipe from right to left. The successful check-out is shown on the display.
If you have forgotten to carry out the check-out, the app will issue a check-out warning. The prerequisite for this warning is that you have given the app the right to send you messages in your settings.
After the check-out, the app calculates the route taken, the corresponding fare and initiates the deduction of the corresponding amount from the stored payment method.
Carry out the check-out in the usual way after noticing it. The system automatically recognizes journeys that have been made on foot, for example, and does not charge for this.
However, if you notice an error in the billing, please report this within 14 days of completing the journey via the contact options in the app or via the contact form to customer service in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
Despite mobile phone signal reception, it is possible that there is no GPS signal in some places, especially in underground areas. If you are in an underground stop, first make sure that you are outside the area where tickets are required. If the check-out is not possible even after leaving an underground stop on the surface, report this via the contact options in the app or via the contact form to the customer dialog in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
If you have allowed “Notifications” via the MVV app on your smartphone, you will be notified of the forgotten check-out five minutes after leaving the stop - the system automatically recognizes whether you are continuing foot, for example. If there is no check-out at this point again, the system will inform you again after a few minutes.
Don't worry! The system recognizes when you are not on a public transportation vehicle. As a result, you will not incur any costs even if you forget to check-out. Once you have reached the maximum travel time on MVV, the system will automatically check you out.
Should you nevertheless notice an error in the billing, please report this within 14 days of completing your journey via the contact options in the app or via the contact form to customer service in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
Yes, you can take more people with you on your account. You can take a maximum of four additional adults (or persons under 21), eight children or a combination of adults and children. In the latter case, two children are equivalent to one adult, i.e. you can also take two adults and four children or one adult and six children.
When taking passengers with you, the user registered in the application at check-in must always travel with the passengers. The passengers must be entered in the app before check-in; it is not possible to add passengers to a trip that is already active. The other passengers must be accompanied by the registered user until they leave the vehicle (bus, streetcar, regional train) or the specially marked operating facilities (S-Bahn, U-Bahn).
The area of validity includes all MVV public transportation vehicles (buses, streetcars, underground (U-Bahn) and suburban trains (S-Bahn) as well as regional trains) in the entire network area. Exceptions are currently on-demand services (e.g. FLEX, RufTaxi), the BergBus and other specially marked transportation vehicles. MVVswipe is not yet available for these services.
Also excluded are all transport services that operate within the network boundaries but where the MVV tariff does not apply. These include, for example, long-distance trains (e.g. ICE, IC and EC) and the Lufthansa express bus from Munich Central Station to Munich Airport.
Journeys outside the MVV fare zone cannot be purchased in the app. Information on the network area can be found here.
The app uses your position to record when you leave the MVV network area during your journey. The electronic travel authorization is only valid for journeys within the MVV network area and is no longer valid after leaving the MVV network area. Before starting your journey, please buy a ticket according to the respective tariff of the carrier (e.g. DB) for the route from the last stop in the MVV or for the entire route.
When a ticket check is carried out, select the function “MVVswipe” => “Manage” in the app. The electronic ticket is then shown on the display. This must be shown to the ticket inspector so that they can check it.
Please note that you are only traveling with a valid ticket if you have checked in correctly before starting your journey.
In principle, the risk of proving the validity of the travel authorization lies with the customer. If you are unable to present the electronic travel authorization (including control elements) or if the travel authorization cannot be checked for technical reasons (e.g. unreadable display, etc.), this will be considered a journey without a valid ticket within the meaning of the regulations of the MVV joint tariff. Therefore, please check the ticket before starting your journey; if in doubt, a ticket must be purchased by other means.
To prevent misuse, the check-in must be completed before entering the public transportation vehicle or before passing through the platform barrier. If the check-in is only carried out on the public transportation vehicle itself, this is considered a journey without a valid ticket within the meaning of the regulations of the MVV joint tariff. The checking staff are also able to determine whether the ticket is an active ticket or just a screenshot.
The MVV app must be running in the background during an active check-in and the setting “Always allow access to location data” must be activated. However, you can use other apps as usual during this time. If the MVV app is completely closed during the journey (after the check-in process), the check-in will still remain active.
Yes, you can take more people with you on your account. You can take a maximum of four additional adults or eight children or a combination of adults and children. In the latter case, two children are equivalent to one adult, i.e. you can also take two adults and four children with you.
The main driver must be at least 18 years old, so children and young people can only be passengers but not the sole main driver.
When taking passengers, the main user registered at check-in in the MVV app must always travel with them. The other passengers must be accompanied by the registered user until they leave the vehicle (bus, streetcar, regional train) or the specially marked operating facilities (S-Bahn, U-Bahn).
Electronic travel authorizations are valid immediately from the time of check-in. It is not possible to purchase electronic travel authorizations that are valid at a later date.
This is not possible with MVVswipe. However, you can use other functions in the MVV app, e.g. the ticket store to buy a “Deutschland-Ticket”.
In the MVV app, under ‘MVVswipe’ => ‘Manage’, you can view the journeys you have made, the tickets you have purchased and your current or past daily fares. Of course, you can also see the number of shared journeys per journey.
Initially, it is possible to pay via PayPal, credit card and SEPA direct debit mandate. We are constantly expanding the number of payment methods.
To use the CheckIn-Check-Out functionality, it is important that you register and add a payment method before your first journey.
You can easily and conveniently customise and change your payment method in the main menu under ‘Profile and access data’ (MVV ID) in the MVV app.
This can have various reasons, please contact the customer dialogue in the category ‘MVVswipe’ (here) using the contact form.
Regardless of whether one or more journeys are made per day with MVVswipe, only one (collective) invoice is issued per day. As day passes according to the MVV community tariff are valid until 6 a.m. on the following day, billing can only take place after this time.
Due to the day ticket logic described above, invoicing and debiting can only be carried out after this time slot, i.e. from 6 a.m. on the following day. Your payment method will be debited within three working days.
On the first journey of the day, MVVswipe (respectively the payment service provider LogPay) reserves €10 on the payment method you have deposited. At the end of the billing period (usually 06:15 on the following day), the system checks how high your actual costs were.
If the actual travel costs are less than €10, the remaining amount will be credited to you. If the actual travel costs exceed the amount of €10, the difference will be debited again.
Please note that the system takes into account all journeys for an entire day - including passengers. Therefore, for example, several single journeys can become a single day ticket or, with a certain number of passengers, even a group day ticket. Depending on the “ticket reached”, the price of a day pass differs from the sum of all individual journeys.
Should you nevertheless notice an error in the billing, please contact us directly via the contact options in the app or via the contact form to customer service in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
On the day after your journey(s), you will receive an e-mail with a receipt and an overview of all journeys made on the previous day.
You can also view past journeys in the MVV app in the MVVswipe tab ("Manage").
Please note that the exact ticket and the associated price may not be known until the end of the day (06:00 a.m. of the following day). If you subsequently discover that the MVVswipe has calculated an incorrect fare or charged an increased price due to an operational disruption, please report this within 14 days of completing your journey via the contact options in the app or via the contact form to customer service in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
The MVV app is only available for iOS and Android operating systems.
There can be various reasons for a malfunctioning app:
If the app has crashed, it can be restarted. This is also possible while driving. If restarting the app does not help, the cell phone should be restarted.
If it is not possible to restart the app and the cell phone or if the problem persists, the app can be reinstalled. If a reinstallation is carried out during an active journey, please contact customer service via the contact form in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
If the app does not work despite the above measures, please buy a ticket via another sales channel (ticket store in the MVV app, ticket machine, ticket counter, bus driver, etc.) - and report the problem to customer service via the contact form in the “MVVswipe” category (here).
Please note: You must be able to show your travel authorization (barcode) at a ticket inspection. Other documents (e.g. screenshots) are not recognized as valid tickets. The customer is responsible for the operational readiness of the mobile device, for the necessary precautions against misuse and for displaying the complete text content of the InOut ticket. If no MVVswipe travel authorization can be shown (e.g. due to technical faults or an empty battery, etc.), this is considered a journey without a valid ticket in accordance with the provisions of the MVV joint tariff. In the event of non-availability, incorrect or incomplete transfer of the travel authorization, the customer is obliged to purchase a valid ticket elsewhere before starting the journey.
A functioning internet connection is always required for the check-in process, as only then can the electronic travel authorization be created and transferred. A functioning Internet connection is also required to change the stored data.
If the mobile phone connection is interrupted during the journey (after the check-in process) for technical reasons, the journey can also be continued without an Internet connection. The electronic travel authorization remains valid for any ticket checks. A working internet connection is required for check-out.
Activation of flight mode during the journey is recognized by the system. No check-out is possible in flight mode, but journey tracking will continue. Under certain circumstances, this procedure can be recognized as fraudulent behaviour.
For a one-hour journey, you can expect data consumption of around 500KB. For longer and shorter journeys, correspondingly more or less. The average battery consumption is around three to four percent per hour.
After the customer has granted access, MVVswipe accesses the location data (GPS) and the motion sensors of the mobile device in order to locate the customer's current location, stops, transfers and destinations as well as the itinerary and journey length.
The location data is only recorded after the check-in has been carried out manually and continues until the check-out has been completed. If the GPS authorization is deactivated during the journey, the system immediately performs a check-out and revokes the travel authorization.
Due to the dense network of mobility points in the MVV, it is important for the CheckIn-CheckOut system to be able to locate your journey as accurately as possible and then bill you for it.
When changing your mobile phone provider, no action is usually required. If you change your cell phone number, you must change this personal information in the MVV app. If you change your smartphone, it is usually necessary to download the MVV app from the app store again in order to be able to log in with the known user data.
In the MVV app, you can view your currently stored data in the main menu under "Profile and access data" (MVV ID) at any time and change it if necessary.
If you wish your personal data to be deleted, please send an email to datenloeschung@mvv-muenchen.de.
Please note that the deletion of personal data only applies to the user account. There are legal retention periods of up to 10 years for invoice-related data (incl. name and address).
The protection of your personal data is important to us, which is why you will find all information on data protection here.
To calculate the correct fare, the location services (GPS) must remain activated in your smartphone (“Always allow access to location data”) and you must check in and out at the start and destination stops. This journey data is stored separately from all other data. This data is only linked to personal data for the purposes of contract and payment processing. No customer movement profiles are created.
